2009 Fantasy Sleeper Candidates

Fantasy MLB

Mark Melancon - Yankees The Yankees future closer has already impressed in Spring. He may just assume 8th inning duties before seasons end. He's a pitcher to watch.

Alfredo Aceves - Yankees Solid pitcher who needs an injury or two to make the team. If he gets a spot start or two, he could impress Yankee brass.

Grant Balfour - Rays If he doesn't start the season as the Rays closer, he's bound to be the man by June. He has the stuff and makeup to be a dominant closer.

Matt Joyce - Rays He'll hit for power and average with the Rays. If he gets the starting gig, it's possible he'll have a 20HR 80RBI season. Fundamentally sound all around.

Rick Porcello - Tigers Also among our top 10 rookie prospects. If he makes the team as a starter, go get him, and get him fast. He has star potential.

Matt Thornton - White Sox Could the Sox try him as a starter in a pinch? He improves with each year and is proving to be an important part of the bullpen. An injury here or there and he could get a chance to become prominent.

Chris Getz - White Sox Could find a substantial spike in playing time for the Sox. His power has improved with age. He could surprise depending on what he does in Spring Training.

Kelly Shoppach - Indians Probably no longer a sleeper candidate, but he can hit for power. Don't be shocked if he leads the AL in HR for catchers.

Jeff Larish - Tigers If he can land a reserve role for the Tigers, he could be a major contributor. He has some pop in his bat, and can steal a base or two. He's an intriguing sleeper candidate.

Dusty Ryan - Tigers Could he possibly be the full time catcher for Detroit by August. He has the potential if given the chance, and if the Tigers struggle early on as they did last season, kids such as Ryan could get an extended look.

Ryan Shealy - Royals Better late than never for the one time phenom. He has the power and hit for a decent average in limited time for KC last season. Given a chance, he could end up sharing DH duties and put up decent numbers.

Jason Lane - Blue Jays How does a guy who was once a can't-miss prospect who had a nice season or two suddenly lose it? Perhaps he hasn't. He just needs a chance, and with Toronto having an anemic offense, he could get a chance to show his skills. Keep an eye on him.

Matt Harrison - Rangers Make no mistake...despite being 9-3 last season, his numbers were not very good. Run support made him a winning pitcher. There's no reason to think the same won't happen this season. And as he matures, he'll improve upon those numbers.

Matt Diaz - Braves Last season he was injured for much of the season, but when healthy, he can flat out rake. If given 400 at-bats, he'll be productive.

John Baker - Marlins He has pop in his bat and should easily win the starting job before long. He can hit, and does well with runners on base.

Bobby Parnell - Mets Seems to be flying under the radar. He's fundamentally sound and throws an above average fastball. If he can secure the number five spot in the rotation, he won't give it up, though he could start the season at AAA regardless of his Spring stats.

Greg Dobbs - Phillies He's better and younger than Feliz. If he played full time, he could hit 20HR and have 90RBI. They gave Werth a chance last season...this year it should be Dobbs who's given a chance.

Steven Shell - Nationals He's the guy who has the stuff to be the closer. He won't be given a chance early on, but if he has the opportunity, he'll do the job well.

Micah Hoffpauir - Cubs The question is not if he can hit, but if there will be room for him. He may have more pop in his bat than Derrek Lee, but finding playing time won't be easy.

Lou Palmisano - Astros With the catcher position in a state of confusion, he could win the job with a strong Spring showing. He can hit, but needs a chance to prove it.

Steve Pearce - Pirates Now's the time to show he belongs. He is a legitimate rookie candidate.

Jon Jay - Cardinals He'll probably start out at AAA, but he could find his way into the lineup this Summer. He has a good eye and can hit for average.

James McDonald - Dodgers He knows how to pitch, and has a great feel on the mound. I could be June before he lands in the rotation, but he's worth a serious look.

Yusmeiro Petit - Diamondbacks Continuously overlooked, if given a spot, he can be a winner. Stuff can be nasty at times.
