Have you ever heard the phrase, "Would you step into my grave that fast?"? Well, apparently.....Gary Carter would. The
Mets haven't yet fired Willie Randolph, but Gary Carter has let it be known that he wants the job.
"Boy, I'll tell you what. I would love that. When I saw that on ESPN today (that Willie was on the hot seat) ... I got on the phone and
I called (Mets VP of media relations) Jay Horwitz and I asked Jay, 'Should I try to call Mr. Wilpon?'
If there is this going on I just want them to know of my availability. I'm only a phone call away,
because my contract allows me to leave the (current) ballclub. I could be in New York tomorrow,
if necessary, because if there's anything at the major league level I can leave this job."
Gary Carter, is currently managing the independent Orange County (Calif.) Flyers. "The comments that David Wright
made saying that, you know, there's no spark, there's no fire - if anything I would love to bring that to the
table because I love the game, have a great passion for it and you know my enthusiasm."
It is important to know that Cater did the same thing before Art Howe was dismissed as Mets manager. This
shows a total lack of class from the former catcher they once called "The Kid". Randolph is still the Mets manager, yet
Carter could care less about Randolph. It is this sort of lobbying from Carter that helped prevent him from getting the Mets
job last time, and will prevent him from getting the job this time. Carter has once again acted as classless and unprofessional
as one possibly could. And it is this lack of judgment that the Mets view as Carter's weakness. If he could make a
poor decision such as this, what will he do on the baseball field managing a $140 million dollar payroll?
Carter is managing an independent team for a reason. His lack of judgment and over-confidence is the primary reason.
So I wish Carter well in his lifelong career as a minor league manager. He'll never get a managerial job in the Majors
until he changes his ways, which is unlikely. But hey...if that doesn't pan out for him...there's always grave robbing.
