Rating The ESPN Baseball Analysts

MLB

Eric Young - Grade (D-) - Still out in left field. What the hell is he talking about? If there's any one guy who makes almost no sense, it's the guy they call "EY". Perhaps the EY should stand for endless yapping. Ravech often pulls him out of his worthless rambling.

Buck Showalter - Grade (B-) - Boring, and unexciting, but solid as an analyst. He knows what he's talking about. He can put you to sleep, but at least he makes sense.

Karl Ravech - Grade (A) - Excellent studio host who keeps things moving. Great interviewing skills. Ravech definitely has a feel for the game and knows what he's talking about. Often picks up slack of others.

John Kruk - Grade (A) - Knowledgeable and entertaining. He's a normal guy who knows how to grab your attention. You have to wonder what he could do as a manager. He's the "average joe" we enjoy listening to when watching ESPN.

Steve Berthiaume - Grade (B) - He's pretty decent on the whole, but not quite in the same league as Ravech. None the less, we could do worse. He does know the game, which is a plus.

Peter Gammons - Grade (A) - Many don't like Gammons, but I do. I find him to be accurate and very informative. He's also a good guy off the field. When I want to know about a particular situation, it's Gammons I hope to see on ESPN.

Chris Berman - Grade (B) - Just a bit tired of Berman. I'd rather see Ravech than Berman. Berman seems to muscle his way into the studio during important games. Of course, he's not bad by any means, but I'd rather see Ravetch lead the troops and have Berman stick to football.

Orestes Destrade - Grade (C) - Well, at least he seems to be improving. Hopefully, ESPN will keep him on the Little League World Series and not too often on MLB games. He's not as bad as he used to be, but he offers little insight that is important.

Orel Hershiser - Grade (C) - Full of himself. Not as good as he thinks he is. All too often discusses his own career, and compares all pitchers to himself. I don't care to hear about his career any more. And more often than not, I disagree with his assessments and analysis. He understands what pitchers are thinking, but not hitters...or coaches...or managers.

Tim Kurkjian - Grade (B) - Funny voice reminds me of the school nerd that every big kid would beat up. But he's full of stats..many worthless, but many are pretty neat to hear about. He knows baseball, and that's the most important thing.

Jon Miller - Grade (B-) - Good baseball voice, but often makes errors that hometown fans can spot during a telecast. He can be entertaining more often than not, and he does seem to broadcast with emotion and passion for the game, which is a good thing.

Joe Morgan - Grade (F) - THE worst analyst I've ever had the misfortune of listening to. Listen to him analyze, and it's easy to know why some former major leaguers lack the baseball knowledge to succeed as manager. Morgan makes almost no sense on a regular basis, and he clearly doesn't do much homework before his telecasts. Sure, we can respect his opinions, but they're always ridiculous opinions. Great player...god awful analyst.

Buster Olney - Grade (A) - He knows what he's talking about. Great studio guest for ESPN radio shows as well. He often fills in for Mike and Mike, and does a great job. He's believable and trustworthy. Olney makes Baseball Tonight better when he's on.

Steve Phillips - Grade (B) - As a Met fan, what can I say without being negatively biased? Phillips is actually entertaining, and quite opinionated. He is off base at times, but at least he stands by his convictions. He is often ripped by Met fans, and sometimes justifiably so...as he is often too harsh on the Mets (and Yankees). He is a good studio host and does well on game telecasts. I do like his GM insight.

Jayson Stark - Grade (B-) - He does a decent job, but I find him flat at times. He knows baseball, and should be more informative being as knowledgeable as he is. There are better...there are worse. He's good, but doesn't stand out.

Fernando Vina - Grade (C-) - He's improved, but still pretty ho-hum as an analyst. Often stumbles over himself. If he left the show, it would be no loss to Baseball Tonight.

Rick Sutcliffe - Grade (B+) - Welcome back. He knows his stuff, and his pitching insights top Hershiser. Sutcliffe also demonstrates a sense of humor which helps. He's a welcome sight when watching ESPN telecasts.

Eduardo Perez - Grade (F) - Someone please have him retire from television. He's awful. He sounds like he's reading from the teleprompter and he is rough as a television personality can be. He makes about 0.5% sense. Sorry, but TV is not for him.

Chris Singleton - Grade (Inc) - Haven't heard enough to give him a grade at this time.
