The Week That Was

General Sports

During the Yankee Stadium closing ceremonies, there were two people who were missing from the festivities. Of course, one of them may not have attended, and the other would have been unable to attend. The two men omitted were Roger Clemens and Joe Torre. While I don't agree with the omission of Clemens, I can understand that there may have been a fear that he would be booed or that he would have caused a distraction. But the omission of Joe Torre is downright wrong.
The entire night was a special one, and it was a night that the Yankees should be proud of. But leaving Joe Torre's name out of any Yankee history is just plain wrong. Joe Torre is part of Yankee history...and it was all good. And for what he did for the organization, he should have been mentioned alongside other great Yankee managers. Perhaps even a Torre family member should have been present.
Perhaps they didn't mention Torre out of respect for current manager Joe Girardi, but his tenure with the Yankees may be short-lived anyway. Joe Torre should have been mentioned, and a video of Torre was more than justified. It was an amazing way to close out the Stadium...but Torre should have been a part of it.

Okay, K-Rod has the all time saves record pitching for the Angels this season, but his game-ending antics are borderline ridiculous. I wouldn't mind seeing him get lit up during the playoffs.

Am I the only one who feels like Mangini is not the guy in New York?

Once was bad enough, but if the Mets collapse for a second year in a row, then it won't be a happy Shea Stadium farewell, nor will it help the fans feel good about the new stadium. Can you imagine if the last game ever played at Shea Stadium results in the Mets being eliminated from the playoffs?

Poor Missouri football fans. I don't know which team is worse...the Rams or the Chiefs. There is no excuse for Herm Edwards starting Thigpen in place of Huard...or anyone else for that matter. And the Rams just look pathetic all around.

Speaking of pathetic, how long will Matt Millen last in Detroit now that the owner's son said that he needs to be fired? Actually, Ford Jr. shouldn't have had to say that Millen needs to be fired. It should be obvious to his father that Millen has turned the Lions into an embarrassment.

I have written about this before, and I am not a Yankee fan, but I still can't imagine tearing down historic Yankee Stadium. Everything is about luxury boxes (for those corporate suits who could care less about baseball), and I can somewhat understand that...but just how much money is enough for the Yankees? Tearing Yankee Stadium down is borderline sacrilege.

I think I'd enjoy Monday Night Football more if Dick Enberg were the play by play man. Mike Tirico is a solid professional, but his football calling just doesn't do it for me. In my book, Enberg is in that elite Gowdy-Michaels-Cosell-Scully play calling company.

Under Coach Kiffin, the Raiders look like a team on the rise. It would be a mistake for Al Davis to make a change now. Look at the absolute mess Kiffin inherited with this team. The Raiders are a team slowly on the rise. Kiffin deserves to remain for the entire season to help turn them around.

The Yankees would be making a monumental mistake if they don't bring back Brian Cashman. The Yankees had a down year, but even with injuries and playing in a tough division, the Yankees are over .500 and have a very outside shot to make the playoffs through the final week of the season. Cashman decided to go with youth in the rotation, and it was the right move. If the Yankees stay the course, they'll be able to overcome a bad year.

Jose Molina hitting the last homerun at Yankee Stadium? Who saw that coming? Babe Ruth hits the first homerun at Yankee Stadium and Jose Molina hits the last. Sometimes, there is no justice.

I had the privilege of working for the Chris Paul Charity Bowling Tournament this past weekend, and I had a blast. What Chris Paul does for his community is incredible. He is a giving person and truly cares about those less fortunate than himself.
The bowling tournament featured NBA stars LeBron James, Rudy Gay, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, and Paul. PBA stars who paired with the NBA stars included Jason Couch, Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones, and Doug Kent.
I won't tell you who won, but it was an awesome event(it will be televised on ESPN October 19th to kick off the PBA bowling season).
Unfortunately, the NBA stars weren't there very long before or after the TV tournament, but it great of them to participate in such a worthwhile event. It was also great for me (and my son) to see these NBA and PBA stars up close and personal, and at times with their guard down. It was a fun event, and I recommend you catch it on ESPN.
But being a PBA member myself (only bowling occasional regional events), I was thrilled to see the bowling professionals stay around following the event and talking to fans while taking photos at the same time. The PBA members who were here were gracious and fun! I was thrilled that I was able to briefly chat with Jason Couch, who is one of the nicest guys you'll want to meet (bowling in Regional events, I don't get to meet the touring professional bowlers). Chris Barnes was besieged by photo takers and obliged with a smile every time.
So congratulations to all of the pros who participated in this wonderful event, and I thank the professional bowlers who made the day that much more enjoyable following the event!
