What The Hell Is Going On Here?

MLB

Richie Sexson sat our for five games due to a prolonged slump that pretty much goes back to last season. It is hard to argue with the decision to bench Sexson based on his performance. But to bench Sexson in favor of Miguel Cairo? Cairo is hitting .204 with no homers, while Sexson is hitting .204 with 9 HR. Cairo hasn't hit a single homerun since 2005, and hasn't hit above .255 since 2004. What the hell is going on here? No wonder Manager, John McLaren's job is in jeopardy.

Omar Minaya did it again...taking in another aging and worthless Latino player in Raul Gonzales. Last month, he signed Abraham Nunez to a contract. Gonzales and Nunez join the likes of Sandy Alomar Jr., Olmedo Saenz, Tony Armas Jr., Rudy Lugo, Jose Lima, Chip Ambres, Wil Cordero, Jose Santiago, Benito Santiago, and Ruben Sierra as players Minaya signed that no other GM wanted. What the hell is going on here? I've said it before and I'll say it again. Shea Stadium is where aging Latino players go to die. Stop wasting the team's money and roster spaces Omar.

We knew that Jay Bruce was going to be a special player, but a .577 average with 3HR and 7RBI in 26 at-bats? What the hell is going on here? This kid is making it look too easy.

The Tampa Bay Rays have the best record in the AL (35-22). What the hell is going on here? Starters Dioner Navarro, BJ Upton, Carl Crawford, Akinori Iwamura, and Jason Bartlett, have combined to hit just 11 homeruns between them in almost 1000 at-bats, so the Rays are not getting it done with the long ball. Their pitching has been fantastic so far, which has been the biggest reason for their successful season. Perhaps lost in the turnaround is the lights-out season by Scott Kazmir. He is currently 5-1 with an ERA of 1.22 and he has yet to give up a single homerun in six starts. That, is an ace.

Statistically, Mariano Rivera is having his best season ever...at age 39. In the past two seasons, he's given up just 12 walks. What the hell is going on here? By comparison, JJ Putz has 22 walks and Francisco Rodrguez has 16 walks...this season alone.

Chipper Jones is hitting .407 this season. What the hell is going on here? For starters, he's hitting .442 against lefthanders, and .439 at home. But perhaps the most telling stat is his batting average when he's ahead in the count. When Chipper swings at the first pitch, he's batting .515. When he's ahead 1-0 in the count, he's hitting .462, and when he's ahead 2-0 in the count, he's hitting .500. When he's ahead in the count 3-1, he's hitting an incredible .625. So for you opposing pitchers, if you want to get Jones out, get ahead of him in the count.

With all the attention on the Phillies Chase Utley, no one seems to be noticing the season that Dan Uggla is having for the Florida Marlins. What the hell is going on here? Uggla has 18HR 41RBI and is hitting .302. Utley is clearly the MVP front-runner, but while Lance Berkman and Albert Pujols are also being considered, Uggla is my #2 choice for MVP. Were would the Marlins be without him?

Joba Chamberlain was terrible in his first start for the Yankees. What the hell is going on here? Blame it on the New York Media. It's rare for a much-hyped rookie pitcher to perform well in his first start for one of the New York teams. We can't forget that Chamberlain is still very much a rookie, and the pressure that was placed on him was enormous. Imagine having your name splashed all over the back pages of all the New York newspapers anointing you as the team's savior. It can't be easy. There are veteran pitchers who can't cope with that...let alone a rookie pitcher. If you don't believe that, take a look at how successful Hughes, Kennedy, and Pelfrey (Mets) have been since beginning the year in their team's rotations.

The Detroit Tigers are scuffling. They're 24-33. So they felt the need to bring up Casey Fossum. What the hell is going on here? Fossum is a lifetime 37-52 pitcher with a career ERA of 5.46. If that isn't an indication of how the Tigers season is going, I don't know what is.

The Reds recalled Homer Bailey to start Thursday's game against the Phillies. What the hell is going on here? The Reds may believe that all of their rookies will have the same success achieved by Jay Bruce, but that's not the case. Despite his massive potential, Bailey isn't ready yet. He's been average at best in AAA. And to make matters worse, he's facing a potent Phillies lineup and pitching in a homerun hitters haven. And as if that wasn't enough, the Phillies pounded Bailey in one of his few major league starts last season. This has disaster written all over it. Bailey has not lived up to the hype, and he is eerily following in the footsteps of Mike Pelfrey, who has been far from good since joining the Mets rotation even though he was projected to be a top of the rotation pitcher. The Reds rushed once promising rookie Ryan Wagner a few years back, and that turned out to be a disaster. Let's hope Bailey can avoid the same fate.

What does a 3.86 ERA get a starting pitcher in Cincinnati? Well, if you're Aaron Harang, it gets you a 2-8 record. What the hell is going on here? Well, in his 14 starts, the Reds have scored two or fewer runs in half of his games. I guess they don't like him much.
