While we've seen players come up from the minor leagues to help their clubs
(Longoria, Clement, Scherzer), there are some heralded young players and former major leaguers who are not close
to be called up due to sub-par performances in AA or AAA. If you're counting on one
of the following minor leaguers to have an impact sooner rather than later,
you may be waiting for a while.
Cameron Maybin - Maybin has shown flashes of power at AA, but his average is a mere .241,
which won't help him get promoted any time soon. Florida's offense has been good
enough that there's no need to rush Maybin.
Josh Fields - Last year he hit 23 homeruns for the White Sox. This year, he's hitting .240
with 4 HR for AAA. The Sox already know what he's capable of, but is this what they
sent him down to do?
Colby Rasmus - A .194 batting average won't get him called up to St Louis before September.
Steve Pearce - He's driving in runs at AAA, but a .242 average doesn't help his cause. He needs
more time in the minors.
Jason Nix - .250 average with 1 HR and 4 RBI. He's sure to get called up at
some point...and be designated for assignment again.
Josh Barfield - He won't get a MLB job back hitting .255 at AAA. Where has his talent gone?
Matt Antonelli - .179 batting average...enough said.
Travis Snider - .198 average. That's in AA. What will he hit in AAA?
Ryan Shealy - Hitting .222 in AAA. That makes his 8 HR a moot point. One of these years....
Jose Tabata - 0 HR and a .231 average at AA. No way he sees the majors in 2008, especially with Yankees.
Jason Botts - .182 average with 2 HR in AAA. High hopes have been dashed a bit. He's still in the Rangers
future, but perhaps not until August at the earliest.
Francisco Liriano - 4.66 ERA. He get a call sooner rather than later, but not just yet. Early June
is a reasonable guess. He's starting to show signs of improvement in May.
Gio Gonzales - 0 wins and an ERA of 4.85 at AAA. He's not ready yet. A's won't rush him.
Liz Radhames - He wasn't on our top 50 prospect list, and with good reason. 0-4 with a
5.22 ERA. However, his strikeout totals are still pretty good.
Phil Humber - 5.29 ERA and a 1-4 record. To think...Humber we did like. He won't get a call from the
Twins for a while.
Eric Hurley - 6.54 ERA with a ton of strikeouts, but a 1-3 record. He's not ready to join Texas
any time soon. September call up is a probability, but not before then.
