Rex Ryan will attempt to do something that Bill Parcells, Joe Walton, Bruce Coslett, Pete Carroll,
Rich Kotite, Al Groh, Eric Mangini, and others have tried, but failed to do. That's lead the Jets to
the Super Bowl. It's been forty years since the Jets went to a Super Bowl. There are many reasons why
the Jets have failed to make it to the big game. For one, other than Parcells, the Jets haven't had
an impressive list of head coaches lead the team. Ryan may prove to be a good one, but he's still
untested. But that isn't the main reason the Jets have failed to make a Super Bowl appearance in
four decades. I ask you one question (for now), and I'll let you decide for yourself. When is the last season
the Jets had a bonafide offensive threat? (Insert cricket sounds here)
Sure, the Jets have had some solid players. Curtis Martin was solid, but was he ever considered to be a
playmaker? Thomas Jones is solid, and had a great 2008 season, but is he a running back that is feared
and/or can change the complexion of a game? What other great running back have the Jets had? They
traded John Riggins before he became a megastar at Washington. What about the wide receiver position?
Granted Keyshawn Johnson was very good, but he didn't quite live up to his full potential. Jericho
Cotchery and Laveranues Coles are good, but really not difference makers. Wesley Walker was probably the
last impact offensive player the Jets had (Favre aside), and his QB, Ken O'Brien, wasn't exactly a
Hall of Fame talent. Then again, perhaps he could have been had the Jets supplied him with more talent.
So now, I ask you these questions:
1) When is the last time the Jets had an offensive player that you would have chosen in the first
round of your fantasy draft?
2) Would the Jets have made the playoffs if they had Larry Fitzgerald at WR instead of a sulking Coles?
3) If Warner could get to the Super Bowl with Anquan Boldin and Fitzgerald, could Favre have not?
The last draft that the Jets drafted a WR, QB, or RB in the first round was in 2001 when they selected
Santana Moss. That
was nine drafts ago. And how about this: The last draft that the Jets selected a RB in the first
round was in 1990...almost twenty years ago, when they made Blair Thomas their first pick in the draft.
For the record, he had a total of 5 TDs for the Jets in his career.
The Jets made a splash by trading for Favre last season. It was a bold move, and worth the gamble, but they
sure didn't give Favre much help. Do Cotchery and Coles match up with Donald Driver and Greg Jennings?
You know the answer to that.
I'm sure Ryan will do fine, but the bottom line here is that the Jets need to start adding some playmakers
on this team. Until they do, Not Ryan, nor Bill Cowher, nor Vince Lombardi, could lead this team
to a Super Bowl. The Jets should look to add a disgruntled Anquan Boldin to the team, or someone of equal
ability. I hear that Tomlinson can be had by the Chargers. But until they do add playmakers
on offense, there's no way the Jets will make a Super Bowl appearance...no matter who the Jets have coaching
their team.
