One former New York Jets coach, the present Jets coach, and hopefully not a future Jets head coach,
all helped coach their teams to defeat on Sunday. All three coaches will be on the hot seat by season's end, and unless
they start showing positive results, they won't be around to coach their respective teams next year.
Eric Mangini seems to have forgotten one important piece of information: His team traded for Brett Favre.
Mangini still manages his offense as if Pennington or Clemens were still the QB. Yesterday against
the Patriots, and for the second week in a row, Mangini called for three straight running plays on
first and goal at the Patriots 3 yard line. With Bubba Franks, Chris Baker, and up-and-coming TE Dustin
Keller at Favre's disposal, Mangini ran three running plays which netted -2 yards. Yes, it was the OC call, but he could have made the change. This happened
early on in the game and would have changed the entire tone . It was no coincidence that
later in the game, in a similar situation, Favre threw a 2 yard TD pass to reduce the Jets deficit.
Favre threw a total of 26 passes. In a losing effort, he should have been given the opportunity to throw it more.
Mangini needs to take advantage of the Hall of Fame QB he has leading his team. Thomas Jones still looks good
as his RB, but this game plan has to revolve around Favre...not Jones. Mangini made this mistake
in week one against Miami, and again this week against the Patriots. He'd better avoid it in week three.
Oh, and one last thought Eric....12 men on the field is not allowed. Your team was flagged twice for it.
Herm Edwards has an uncanny ability to take a decent team and turn them into mush. He's now completed the transformation
with the Chiefs, turning them into a mess of a football team. Yesterday, after throwing an interception early
in the game, Edwards pulled Damon Huard in favor of Tyler Thigpen. Oh sure, the Chiefs tried to spin it by
saying Huard had a mild head trauma. Huard said he had a stiff neck that was a "little sore". Translation: Edwards
wanted Thigpen to QB. Do you think Peyton Manning would sit out if his neck were a little sore? Edwards
has insisted that he wanted to get Thigpen in game action, and Huard admitted after the game that the game plan was
for Thigpen to get in the game. The result: Thigpen was 14-33 with a 54 QB rating. The Chiefs scored 8 points
against a team that allowed 41 points at home a week earlier.
Granted Larry Johnson looks like he's lost a step, but he had just 12 carries for 22 yards. There's no way
he should have 12 carries while Thigpen throws the ball 33 times against a Raider team that is better
against the pass than the run. And we won't even talk about the defense which allowed 300 yards rushing
on the ground. Herm was supposed to be a defensive genius, but now..he's brought his defense down just as
low as he's brought down the team's offense. Nice going Herm. You've turned this team into the Royals of the NFL.
Marvin Lewis has turned this team into the bumbling Bengals. This team is as undisciplined as a team can
be in the NFL. Against the Titans, they had too many players on the field...once on offense, and once on defense.
That is unacceptable. Late in the first half, their defense was "surprised" by a draw play,
allowing Johnson to break off a 51-yard run. "I think everybody in the stadium knew they
were going to run a draw, except for maybe the 11 guys on the field", Lewis said. Perhaps
Lewis should have ensured that the guys on the field knew it.
The Bengals look as bad, and it's a reflection of the lame-duck coach who has lost the respect of the
players, fans, and the team's owner. It's time for a coaching change ASAP in Cincy.
